John Ryan, who retired last May as head of the quality assurance division of the Hawaii State Department of Agriculture, has founded Ryan Systems in Southern California.

The company will specialize in designing and supplying radio frequency identification, sensor-enabled traceability and food safety solutions, according to a news release.

During his tenure in Hawaii, Ryan, a pioneer in fresh produce food safety, quality and traceability, helped develop sensor technology capable of providing supply chain traceability while simultaneously collecting and reporting temperature data for shippers and suppliers.

“Real-time data are available on-line for all supply chain players,” Ryan said in the release. “This is a critical quality and food safety control advancement for the produce industry. This management technology is low cost, recyclable and electronic.”

Among the projects at Ryan Systems is research aimed at resolving import and export food safety concerns. It has begun international testing of RFID technology traceability on shipments linking Taiwan, Hawaii and California, he said.

Ryan Systems also has founded a website that will register companies that have been safety certified and will help market the companies, Ryan said. He also is working with a software company to develop further a Ryan designed computer system that will collect traceability, risk assessment and compliance data and help to speed up recalls.

Ryan Systems is based in Canyon Lake, Calif. The company’s website is www.RyanSystems.com.
