Scientific Certification Systems has been accredited to certify food safety and social responsibility standards under the Tesco Nurture program.

Tesco Nurture is for North American and Central American grower-shippers who sell produce to the Tesco supermarket chain based in the United Kingdom, said Heena Patel, director of food and agriculture auditing services at Emeryville, Calif.-based Scientific Certification Systems.

Tesco Nurture has audited suppliers of fruits and vegetables since its creation in 1992. Tesco also works with the Ethical Trading Institute to ensure suppliers are assessed annually for compliance with ethical standards and worker welfare requirements.

The SCS accreditation announced in late November covers certification for all three levels of Tesco Nurture — bronze, silver and gold.

SCS offers auditing and training services to growers, food manufacturers, distributors and retailers that include Organic, HACCP, Safe Quality Food, GAP/GMP, British Retail Consortium, and GlobalGAP certification.

The company, which has offices abroad, also offers micro-pathogen testing; flavor management training and analysis; responsible sourcing certification; and pesticide residue testing.
