Customers and employees of Safeway Inc., Pleasanton, Calif., donated $10.4 million to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Tucson, Ariz.

Safeway executive vice president Larree Renda presented MDA national youth chairman Luke Christie with the check during MDA’s Labor Day telethon in Las Vegas.

According to an MDA news release, Safeway has raised more than $68 million for the association over the past decade.

Donations made to MDA support international neuromuscular disease research, to find treatments and cures for the 43 diseases covered by MDA, according to the release.

This year’s 46th annual telethon raised $61.5 million during six hours of primetime.
