Sambrailo Packaging plans to introduce a line of environmentally friendly clamshells Oct. 17-19 at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit in Anaheim, Calif.
Watsonville, Calif.-based Sambrailo’s trademarked Go Greener! Clamshells are made with 100% post-consumer recycled PET from clear and green beverage bottles. The clamshells’ green translucent color seeks to capture the attention of organic shoppers and the company touts the product as one of the first green packaging products for organic berries on the market, according to a news release.
In the past, there has not been a reuse for the green plastic beverage bottles in the U.S., and Sambrailo is recycling and reusing green plastic flake from the bottles that would otherwise enter landfills or be shipped overseas for use in other hard plastic goods.
The clamshells are available in the Mixim Classic 1-pound friction-lock, 1-pound LV button-lock, and in 6-ounce LV (5x5) and work well for strawberries, raspberries and blackberries but can also be used for other organic produce items, according to the release.
Recyclable film labels applied with a water-soluble adhesive are also available.
“More than 33 million pounds of green plastic could be reused in one year,” Sara Mailhot, product development manager, said in the release. “This statistic is hypothetically based on all CCOF-certified organic strawberry growers in the U.S. and Mexico using the Go Greener! 1-pound clamshells for one year, so the real potential could far exceed this number as sales grow and the product line increases.”
All of the materials comply with Food and Drug Administration, Canadian and Association for Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers regulations for recyclability, according to the release.
