The Silicon Valley Leadership Group’s Heart & Soles 5K was Feb. 8 at Hellyer Park.

“At least 35 schools will receive salad bars this year alone,” said Nancy Sanchez, spokeswoman for the group.

Team California for Healthy Kids is an initiative of the state Department of Education, established by state superintendent of public instruction Tom Torlakson. It launched a pilot salad bar project for Santa Clara County in November with an installation at a Gilroy elementary school. San Jose is the county seat.

Public health officials, local foundations and Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools have all supported the effort. Gilroy was the first city in the county to install a salad bar in all of its public school cafeterias.
