San Miguel Produce plans to introduce redesigned bags for its Cut ‘N Clean Greens brand at the Produce Marketing Association Fresh Summit in Anaheim, Calif.

Oxnard, Calif.-based San Miguel is scheduled for booth 3023 at the Oct. 17-19 trade show. The new bags mark the kickoff of the fresh-cut packaged greens brand’s 20th anniversary.

The line includes kales, chards, collards and mustard greens. The grower and processor will mark the anniversary throughout 2015 with marketing and promotional programs.

Some of the bags’ features include:

  • a smaller size, 10 ounces, that targets consumer preference;
  • new varieties such as Tuscan kale, as well as variety taste profiles;
  • enhanced color coding for variety recognition; and
  • recipes and expanded information about nutritional benefits.

The micro perforated bags are recyclable.

San Miguel Produce has grown greens and other commodities since 1976. In 1995, it conducted a national survey of consumer interest in what were then considered southern-style cooking greens. That showed a market for prewashed and chopped greens.

Initially, San Miguel partnered with Southern California retailers such as Vons, Safeway, Ralphs, Stater Bros. and Albertsons to test market the concept.

“These retailer partners were key in helping us to pioneer the cooking greens category from what was a 100% bunch commodity program to an entirely new fresh-cut program with incremental new revenues for the produce department,” Jan Berk, chief operating officer, said in a news release.
