Sid Wainer & Son, New Bedford, Mass., has donated at least $600,000 to the United Way’s Hunger Commission of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Henry Wainer, president, said the company had donated $608,000 over the past four years. He said it had been donating to the commission for years before, but the way it tracked its donations prohibited it from determining exactly how much went to the bank.

He said the company was community-minded. Its Jansal Valley farms were intended to help local farms grow and harvest produce formerly not grown in the area.

The United Way of America is based in Alexandria, Va., and the Hunger Commission of Southeastern Massachusetts is also based in New Bedford.
