The New York Apple Association signed soccer player Abby Wambach as an ambassador for New York state apples.

The campaign, Abby for Apples, will be spread through social media, television, radio, print, online advertisements and display signs in stores, according to a news release.

“Abby is everything we’d want in an Apple Ambassador — local roots that have grown into a worldwide following, not to mention setting a healthy example with her athletic lifestyle,” Jim Allen, New York Apple Association president, said in the release. “We’ll certainly get the attention of soccer moms and kids in the New York region, they just love her.”

Wambach, a U.S. women’s soccer player, is the leading scorer in the world.

“Growing up around a family-owned farm and garden store, Wambach Farms, fresh produce was a huge part of my childhood. Whether it was selling homegrown New York apples, or eating them, I learned how important it is to sustain a healthy diet — and as they say, ‘an apple a day, keeps the doctor away,’” Wambach said in the release. “Being a New York native, I am excited to join the New York Apple Association to create more awareness that the best apples in the world come from New York orchards.”

The campaign begins in the fall. For more information, visit www.nyapplecountry.com.
