Hartsville, S.C.-based Sonoco collaborated with Paper Pak Industries, La Verne, Calif., and Bunzl Distribution, St. Louis, on UltraFreshSystem technology.
UltraFreshSystem combines a thermoformed Sonoco tray with Paper Pak’s UltraZapXtendaPak food safety pad, according to a news release. The tray has an insert to channel liquid away from the product. The pad absorbs moisture inside the package and emits carbon dioxide to ward off yeast and mold.
The aim is to maintain appearance and add to shelf life by slowing produce respiration rate.
“The UltraFreshSystem is a cost-effective package that delivers superior merchandising appeal and extended shelf life,” Rodger Fuller, vice president of global rigid plastics at Sonoco, said in the release. “Produce processors can also count on less shrink, better margins and reduced packaging costs.”
The tray is also designed to lower stacking height and increase shipping density, according to the release. The tray has a composite surface aimed at minimizing the risk of cross-contamination by offering a fast seal at low temperatures.
