Source Organic plans to offer a certified organic greenhouse pepper and tomato import program in North America starting in mid-November.

That’s when Israel’s pepper and tomato season kicks off. The offering is expected to go year-round and include Dutch certified organic greenhouse products arriving in April, according to a news release.

Santa Cruz, Calif.-based Source Organic is a subsidiary of United Natural Foods Inc.

The program will include red, yellow and orange bell peppers plus vine tomatoes in large and cherry sizes. It marks the introduction of a sweet pointed organic pepper variety, the palermo, to the U.S. market. The palermo was previously available in Europe.

Source Organic represents three organic exporters operating in Israel – Edom UK, Arava Export Growers Ltd., and Gilad Desert Produce Ltd.

Various options in private labeling, packaging, organic bulk Price Look-Up-stickered product, f.o.b. and door-to-door logistics will be available, according to the release. Source Organic also offers sales training and category marketing initiatives, among other services.

Are the plants grown in water or in soil? I didn't think a product could be USDA certified organic unless the product was grown in soil. Has this requirement changed and if so what is the source of food for the plants?
