South African citrus season a success

While the South African citrus season wasn’t smooth, good quality and consistent supplies still made it a successful one.

According to Suhanra Conradie, chief executive officer of the Western Cape Citrus Producers Forum, the group of about 350 South African growers who export citrus to the U.S., the growers really connect with U.S. consumers.

She said during the season, South African growers spent about a month in the U.S. doing in-store demos and talking with consumers.

“Consumers loved talking to the South African growers,” Conradie said.

The last of the navels and midknight oranges arrived in East Coast ports in late October, and product should remain in the market into early November.

The season was difficult for exporters to the U.S. because California supplies stayed in the market longer, Conradie said.

“We showed discipline in our shipments,” she said. “It can’t work without that.”
