The six-acre location, in Oakland Park, is about six miles from the company’s present operations in Pompano Beach.
While the new building is similar in square footage to the company’s two leased buildings, because of efficiencies at the new plant, storage capacity is expected to increase by 50%, said Michael Matras, vice-president.
“This building is much higher and more efficient because it doesn’t have as many rooms and doors,” Matras said. “It will have newer and better equipment. The building isn’t cut-up as much and is three-high single-level storage.”
The larger acreage provides more trailer parking capacity and allows the company to store and process more ocean containers from six receiving docks and 12 shipping docks, he said.
The new building includes modern refrigeration capacities and food safety capabilities, including certification from Santa Maria, Calif.-based PrimusLabs, Matras said.
The capacity improvements are important because the company expects increased container business following improvements at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., he said.
International Cold Storage Pompano Beach, Fla.-based International Cold Storage is moving to larger and more efficient facilities. The operation features an upgraded inventory control system that allows customers to view product handling through real-time information, Matras said.

The grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 22.
Matras and Joel Barthel, Matras’ stepson and president and CEO, founded the company in 2003.
Barthel has worked in operations, logistics, IT and accounting for 25 years, including president of Cooltech Inc, vice president of Soltech Inc., as well as in operations at Sol y Mar Shipping, all based in Pompano Beach.
