Southern grocers bought; Supervalu cuts jobs, costs

Grocery stores across the Deep South have a new owner under a deal announced Feb. 8.

Belle Foods LLC is buying Southern Family Markets’ 57 stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi, according to the Birmingham (Ala.) News.

Southern Family Markets’ lineup includes Food World, Piggly Wiggly, Bruno’s and Southern Family Markets locations.

Belle Foods is based in Birmingham, according to the report, and is headed by William White, who as president and chief operating officer boasts 30 years of retail and wholesale distribution experience.

Elsewhere in the retail grocery sector, Minneapolis-based Supervalu Inc. is cutting 800 positions nationwide in a move to reduce operating costs and position itself to be more price competitive, according to a company news release.

The cuts affect all company offices and most departments, but in general, store-level staffing is not affected, according to the Feb.7 announcement.

In the past year, Supervalu has focused on price reductions and emphasizing on what it calles “hyperlocal retailing” at its more than 1,100 stores nationwide, according to the release.

The grocer also is investing heavily in its Save-A-Lot hard discount stores and expanding its wholesale distribution business to its more than 2,000 independent retailers.
