Harvest of black missions should begin about April 27, with brown turkeys following about May 1 and sierras about May 5, said Kurt Cappelluti, sales manager of Madera, Calif.-based Stellar.
The April 27 start is “by far the earliest” for the company, Cappeulluti said.
“This is the nicest weather we’ve ever had in my life,” he said. “I’ve never seen better growing conditions.”
Stellar expects to ship about 2 million tray packs of figs this season, about the same amount as last year, Cappelluti said.
But the company expects a big boost in production of its tiger figs, which should start shipping in late July. Cappelluti predicts about 150,000 tray packs of tigers this season, up from 60,000 last season.
Stellar plans to ship California figs through January 2015.
