Madera, Calif.-based Stellar Distributing Inc. expects to significantly increase production of California-grown tiger figs this season.

For the past several years, production has been limited, said Kurt Cappelluti, sales manager. But this season, 300 acres of young trees are coming into production for the company, he said.

“It’s unique, and we feel very lucky to have it,” Cappelluti said. “Everybody loves it.”

The tiger fig is a sweet variety with striped green and yellow skin and what Cappelluti characterizes as “strawberry-red” flesh.

Also known as the panache, the tiger fig is harvested in late summer.

Stellar grows more than 4,000 acres of figs, Cappelluti said. The company expects to kick off the deal with brown turkey figs in May.
