Stemilt Growers Inc. plans to donate up to $1,500 for a college scholarship for a Wenatchee student graduating this year.

Wenatchee, Wash.-based Stemilt has joined Wenatchee Learns, a Wenatchee-based educational initiative, on a scholarship program for a student graduating from a Wenatchee high school or for a graduating home-school student in Wenatchee, according to a Stemilt news release.

Stemilt will donate $1 for every “like” received on the Wenatchee Learns Facebook page, up to $1,500. The money will fund a scholarship through the Washington Apple Education Foundation, the Washington tree fruit industry’s charitable organization.

The scholarship winner will be announced in mid-May.

Stemilt also has given more than $15,000 in scholarships for children of Stemilt employees, students pursuing accounting degrees and students who qualify for the Thomas K. Mathison Memorial scholarship, named in honor of the company’s late founder.

Stemilt says they will match up to $ 1,500, huh?? And they stated this in a press release? This is not even worth the time and effort of a press release. While any contribution is commendable, Stemilt ought to be a little prouder of who they are, and what they are, to the local community. Come on guys, throw $ 1,000 out there for 20 kids from all over the region. $20,000 is worth a press release. Just my opinion.
