Apio Shanghai Blend Stir Fry KitCourtesy Apio Inc.Fresh-cut vegetable shipper Apio Inc. has introduced two stir-fry kits with sauce under its Eat Smart label.

Guadalupe, Calif.-based Apio, a subsidiary of Landec Corp., is promoting them for such superfood — or nutrient dense — content as kale, broccoli, bok choy, brussels sprouts and chard.

The Shanghai Blend kit includes kale, bok choy, brussels sprouts, snow peas and carrots with a hoisin sauce. Cooking directions are on the back. The package includes a recipe for use in a main dish with soba noodles and pork.

The Kale & Red Chard kit includes red chard, kale, broccoli florets, snow peas and carrots. A garlic-flavored soy sauce is by Apio. A recipe on the package outlines use with chicken and rice.

Both products ship nationwide in 12-ounce and 32-ounce bags.

The stir-fry kits are easy to combine with a protein, according to Cali Tanguay, Apio director of marketing.

“Both kits allow any cook to prepare a delicious, hot and nutritious dish in a matter of minutes,” she said in a news release. The recipes can be used with a skillet, wok or microwave.

The products are in part a response to foodservice trends. According to the National Restaurant Association’s “What’s Hot” survey of chefs last year, 51% named kale and dark greens; 42% identified snow peas; and 28%, brussels sprouts.

According to a pair of Technomic Inc. reports in late 2013, broccoli is eaten by more than half of consumers once a week; carrots by 62% each week; and brussels sprouts by 30% multiple times per month.
