Rio Rico, Ariz.-based SunFed plans to sponsor cyclist Sofia Arreola, a native of Monterey, Mexico, in her quest for gold in the 2016 Olympics.
The fruit and vegetable importer decided to help underwrite Arreola’s training after Brett Burdsal, director of marketing, met her about a year ago, according to a news release.
“To me she embodies the healthy, active person that, regardless of age or gender, we should all strive to be,” he said in the release.
Arreola said having a produce company as a partner is a natural fit since fruits and vegetables are an important part of her day.
“Being able to partner with SunFed is great,” she said in the release. “I look forward to enjoying all of their incredibly fresh produce they will be sending. Absolutely nothing beats enjoying full flavored fruit or fresh vegetables as I am training, recovering or just hanging out.”
A national track cycling champion and two-time silver medalist in the 2013 World Championships, the 23-year-old Arreola lives and trains in Colorado Springs, Colo., and races for Team Twenty16.
She will be competing in the upcoming Union Cycliste Internationale World Cups, which include stops this year in Mexico, Great Britain, Colombia and France.
