Enza ZadenPaul Mastronardi, chief executive officer of Mastronardi Produce Inc., is the scheduled keynote speaker at the Enza Zaden variety showcase Sept. 25 in San Juan Bautista, Calif.

The company’s Sunset labeled Campari and Y.E.L.O. tomatoes use Enza Zaden seed varieties.

Mastronardi will speak about branding and packaging, the importance of seed, strengthening relationships with buyers and the logistics of working with North American supermarkets. The showcase, which includes a luncheon, is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Enza Zaden’s research station in San Juan Bautista.

“Paul Mastronardi is a pioneer among produce growers,” Freek Knol, greenhouse sales manager for Enza Zaden North America Inc., said in a news release. “We’re excited to gain insights into where he feels the market is heading, and where the new and or untapped opportunities are for our growers.”

Products shown will include the company’s current and next generation babyleaf, Eazyleaf one-cut lettuce varieties, head lettuce, spinach, peppers, arugula, cauliflower, leek, onion and zucchini varieties.

The showcase allows longtime and new customers to learn, collaborate and ultimately expand their field, high tunnel and heated greenhouse operations, Ton van der Velden, president and chief executive officer of Enza Zaden North America, said in the release.

Erica Renaud, North America business manager for herbs and organics, will present certified organic varieties developed under the company’s Vitalis Organic Seeds division. Those will include parsley, dill and cilantro, plus new basil varieties with advanced resistance to downy mildew and fusarium plus extended shelf life, Renaud said.

Experts on all varieties, crop development, shelf-life research and consumer trends from both conventional and organic seed perspectives are expected to attend, as well as the Enza Zaden board and the supervisory board from the Netherlands.
