Super Bowl spud bet prompts verbal joust

Washington State PotatoesFor every point scored in the Super Bowl, 500 pounds of potatoes will be donated to a food bank in the winning team’s city thanks to a bet between the Washington State Potato Commission and the Colorado Potato Administrative Committee.

The Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos meet Feb. 2.

The wager prompted verbal sparring between leaders of the two trade groups.

“We can’t wait to have the Seahawks win 47-3 and see 25,000 pounds of Colorado potatoes make their way up to a food bank in Seattle,” Washington State Potato Commission executive director Chris Voigt said in a news release. “But if by some miracle, or special treatment by the refs, Denver is able to pull out the victory then we will donate to one of their food banks.”

“It is pretty straightforward, the Broncos will win and Washington state will be donating potatoes to a food bank in Denver,” Colorado Potato Administrative Committee executive director Jim Ehrlich said in the release. “Although it is not really fair since Colorado potatoes are better tasting.”

The loser, though — Voigt or Ehrlich — will have to wear a potato costume with the rival team’s jersey in their city, and do a promotion for the other state’s potatoes.

“I’m not concerned as much with the possibility of having to wear the costume as I am of Colorado having grown enough potatoes to cover the bet when the Seahawks run up the score on the Broncos,” Voigt said. “(L)ast year our growers produced over 9.5 billion pounds of potatoes. So we have nothing to fear since we have the superior team and superior potatoes.”

Both organizations have been sharing and posting banter and videos on each organization’s Facebook page.

The winning organization will select the food bank to award the potatoes to. “We are just hoping for a high score either way,” Ehrlich said.

This dude from Seattle appears to be a real jackwagon! Everyone knows Colorado potatoes are far better than the soft junk from Washington.
