WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — In the height of harvest, south Florida celebrated its corn heritage at the 13th Sweet Corn Fiesta.

Doug OhlemeierAnne Holt, office manager of Twin H Farms, Belle Glade, and Tommy Holt, owner, view some crates of corn ready to be shucked, cooked and served to consumers participating in the April 28 Sweet Corn Fiesta. The popular yearly event in West Palm Beach, Fla., attracts consumers interested in corn. The April 28 festival celebrated one of the region’s leading crops with growers shucking, cooking, serving and selling crates of corn.

Up to 4,000 attended the event, said Anne Holt, an event organizer and office manager of Twin H Farms, Belle Glade.

“This event just keeps growing,” Holt said. “We’re bringing corn to the people rather than making them come to us in the Glades. We’re here to promote corn to the people. It’s such a fun event and everyone likes participating.”

“It’s great to see all the people here,” said Shaun McKinstry, a farm manager with JEM Farms, Belle Glade. “A lot of people don’t understand where their corn comes from.”

Sweet Corn Fiesta.Money generated by the festival supports Palm Beach County agricultural education as well as the Lighthouse Café, a Belle Glade-based food relief organization.

The event features competitive corn shucking and eating contests and is cosponsored by the Florida Sweet Corn Exchange and the West Palm Beach County Farm Bureau.

Florida’s sweet corn deal usually peaks in volume by mid-May and runs through late May.
