Syngenta, Greensboro, N.C., has chosen Thomas Fantozzi as the recipient of the 2012 Syngenta Almond Scholarship.

Fantozzi is scheduled to be recognized at the Almond Industry Conference on Dec. 11.

Fantozzi is a sophomore at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and is pursuing a degree in agricultural business, according to a news release.

The $5,000 scholarship honors students involved in the almond industry and pursuing careers in agriculture in California, according to the release.

His grandfather, uncle and father are almond farmers and Fantozzi has worked in the family business for years.

“My family has been putting in more tree nuts,” Fantozzi said in the release. “I see that in my future and earning the Syngenta scholarship helped reinforce that passion.”

Scholarship entries were judged by an industry panel. Malcolm Media, the Almond Board, Growing magazine and Syngenta were part of the panel, according to the release.
