Tanimura & Antle has started packing its Artisan Sweet Italian red onions in Yuma, Ariz., and California’s Imperial Valley.
Most sizes are jumbo or extra jumbo, Anthony Mazzuca, onion commodity manager for Salinas, Calif.-based Tanimura & Antle, said in a news release. Volumes and quality are good, Mazzuca said. The San Joaquin Valley is expected to come into production next.
The sweet red onion is available year-round. They’re sold in 2-, 3- and 5-pound bags for consumers; and in 25- and 50-pound sacks as well as 40-pound cartons.
It’s a proprietary seed variety originally from Italy.
