(CORRECTED) MONTEREY, Calif. — On a Saturday morning at the Produce Marketing Association Foodservice conference, about 200 participants couldn’t wait to hit the ground running.
Around 6:30 a.m., they were poised at the starting line for the second annual PMA Foundation 5K Race for Talent.
Chris Wegener of MRV Services was the fastest man on the course near Fisherman’s Wharf Monterey, crossing the finish at 18:20. Stacy Ward of Coastal Sunbelt Produce was the top woman at 20:50.
The 5-kilometer race raised funds for the PMA Foundation for Industry Talent. Of those who registered, 178 recorded times.
In the men’s race, medals also went to Markon Cooperative’s Chris Casson, second at 18:57; and Boskovich Farms’ Russ Widerburg, third at 19:44.
Women’s medalists included PMA Foundation’s Michele Hoffman, second at 21:34; and Stephanie Owen of Veg-Fresh Farms, third at 23:15.
Turning out 22 runners, Taylor Farms dominated the team awards. Honored as the largest team entry, the Salinas-based company also got the nod for best team attire. Two of their members donned the Taylor Farms and Smart Wash superhero costumes last seen in a produce mascot race at the California Rodeo Salinas.
The award for best team spirit went to the Spudtacular! team.
