Teleconferences to answer industry food safety questions

Food and Drug Administration officials will answer produce safety questions in a series of eight teleconferences.

The Produce Safety Alliance — a joint effort of Cornell University, the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture — is hosting the question and answer sessions, according to a news release from the alliance.

Jim Gorny, FDA senior advisor for produce safety, and Erick Snellman, policy analyst with FDA, will answer questions in the sessions, according to the release.

The first teleconference session on “Understanding Exemptions” is planned for 11 a.m. EDT on March 18. The second question and answer session will focus on “Agricultural Water” on March 25 at 11 a.m. EDT. The third and fourth teleconferences, on soil amendments and domestic and wild animals, respectively, are set for April 22 and April 25, and also will be at 11 a.m. EDT.

Four other sessions have yet to be scheduled, according to the news release.

To participate in the scheduled teleconferences, call 866-906-9888 about five minutes before scheduled start times and enter the passcode 8140591, according to the release. No registration is required.

For questions about the teleconferences, contact Gretchen Wall at 607-255-6806 or at glw53@cornell.edu, according to the release.

Industry members have until May 16 to comment on FDA’s proposed produce safety rule. Online comments need to be submitted online to the FDA by May 16, according to the release.

Written comments and questions may also be faxed to the FDA at 301-827-6870 or mailed to: Division of Dockets Management (HFA-305), Food and Drug Administration, 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061, Rockville, MD 20852.
