Chicago distributor Testa Produce Inc. has won an award for its environmentally friendly new distribution center.

The 91,000-square-foot building, which opened in May 2011, has been selected Best Green Building Project of 2011 by ENR Midwest, a trade journal that covers the construction industry, according to a Testa news release.

The company’s $24 million facility saves 60% on energy costs through a variety of green technologies including solar panels and a wind turbine. The building also features a water-recycling system, a vegetated roof, bioswales and a retention pond for stormwater. It is on track to become the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum-certified food distribution facility in the U.S.
