The Illinois Chamber of Commerce and Illinois Development Council honored the Testa Produce Distribution Center, Chicago, with an Edie award for a significant economic development project.

Testa not only expanded operations, but also equipped the 91,000-square-foot building with solar panels and a freestanding wind turbine, according to a news release.

These additions should provide enough power to offset the building’s energy needs by approximately 30%.

A water management system will help reduce water usage by more than 40%, using an internal rainwater-harvesting system, 45,000-square-foot barreled, vegetated roof and other methods, according to the release.

The building meets the standards for the U.S. Green Building Council and the company has been named the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum Refrigerated Foodservice Facility in the U.S., the release said.

The awards will be presented June 8 in Chicago. Four other winners were also selected for the honor.
