Packer Editor Greg Johnson announced the award March 22 at the America Trades Produce Conference.TUBAC, Ariz. — The Giumarra Cos.’ Walter Ram was named The Packer’s 2nd Annual Importer of the Year Award at the America Trades Produce Conference on March 22.
Ram, Giumarra’s vice president of food safety and regulatory affairs, was honored for his contibutions to the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, and his overall food safety work for the produce industry.
Ram said he was honored to be recognized by his peers and credited Giumarra Cos. for having a atmosphere that fosters such involvement in industry issues.
The Packer said Ram “has arguably done more for the produce industry and for Nogales-area importers than for his own company.”
Ram serves on the board of directors of the FPAA and is on the board of the United Fresh Produce Association in Washington, D.C.
He was described as a tireless worker who’s spent countless hours working with fellow companies on food safety issues, and traveling to Washington D.C., working with government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Ram received the award at the 2nd annual America Trades Produce conference, March 21-23, hosted by the FPAA and the Texas Produce Association, which has sessions and workshops on cross-border trading, food safety and transportation issues.
