To provide up-to-the-minute industry news to produce professionals, The Packer has an app for smartphones and tablets that also makes critical pricing and shipping information available anytime, anywhere.
“As a news organization, this is another outlet for The Packer’s readers,” said Dean Horowitz, vice president of media operations for Vance Publishing Corporation, The Packer’s parent company.
“We know our readers are not sitting in front of their computer screens all day. They are out working. With The Packer app we can provide them important, relevant content no matter where they are.”
The app launched Aug. 1, and is available for iPhones, iPads and Android phones and tablets. Those who have paid subscriptions to The Packer’s weekly newspaper automatically have access to the app.
Also, the app’s sponsors — Stemilt Growers, Well-Pict Berries and N2N Global — are making the app available as a gift to their customers.
Similar to thepacker.com, the app provides access to news, videos, commodity pricing, shipping information and weather forecasts. More than 13% of visitors to The Packer’s website are already accessing the site via mobile devices, Horowitz said.
“Those people are our target audience for the introductory phase of The Packer app,” Horowitz said. “The current version will be monitored for the rest of this year, and in 2013 we will launch the next version with changes based on usage and information we gather.”
Horowitz said the goal behind the app is for The Packer to be an even larger part of the regular work day for fresh produce professionals.
