On June 18, Tomra sponsored a grand opening for the modern facility that is constructed on a site that is more than 30% larger than its previous building in the same metropolitan area, according to a news release.

A subsidiary of Norway-based Tomra Systems ASA, Tomra Sorting Solutions manufactures sorting and processing systems for the fresh and processed food industries.

Participants, which included city officials and customers, toured the 60,000-square-foot facility and viewed demonstrations of Tomra’s sorting, peeling and processing systems which allow customers to experiment with their own applications.

They saw new technology for sorting almonds, walnuts and pistachios.

“With extra space and better facilities, including test, demonstration and development areas, the new West Sacramento site will enable our U.S. team to concentrate on developing solutions for the food industry in the region,” Ashley Hunter, senior vice president, said in the release. “The new premises will enable them to better serve their growing customer base in terms of sales and service.”

Tomra Sorting SolutionsThe move was triggered by Tomra in recent years experiencing average yearly U.S. total revenue increases of nearly 40%, according to the release.

The company has been hiring additional personnel and the new facility helps relieve overcrowding, provides for future expansion and offers larger offices and training rooms for customers and the more than 50 workers who work in sales, service, application engineering, finance and administration staffers, according to the release.

The opening of the California operation follows a successful relocation of Tomra’s facilities in Dublin, Ireland, and an expansion of Tomra Sorting Solutions’ global headquarters in Leuven, Belgium, according to the release.

Tomra has been based in West Sacramento for 15 years and in California for more than 30.
