University of California DavisRegistration remains open for the 36th annual postharvest technology short course June 16-27 at the University of California, Davis.

The second week is optional. Cost for the first week is $1,975; for both weeks, $2,995. More information is online.

The first week consists of lectures, discussions and lab sessions at the university. Topics include safety, harvesting systems, cooling, storage, transportation, energy use, marketing and new technologies.

In the second week, participants tour packinghouses, distribution centers, field operations and transportation facilities throughout California.

The course is led by University of California Cooperative Extension specialist Beth Mitcham, director of the Postharvest Technology Center at Davis. Topics include the biology and technology of handling fruits, vegetables, nuts and ornamentals.

“The course is like a mini-masters in all things postharvest,” Britta Hansen, regional centers of innovation specialist with the university’s Horticulture Innovation Lab, said in a news release. She attended it last year.
