The U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended the comment period on the petition for allowing the genetically engineered Arctic apple through the end of January.

According to the Dec. 31 announcement from USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the agency is reopening the comment period for 30 more days due to numerous requests for additional time to submit comments.

Originally set to expire Dec. 9, the public comment period on the browning resistant apple from Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. will now end Jan. 30. Comments can be submitted online. As of Jan. 1, more than 6,100 comments had been received on the petition.
