The Organic Trade Association, Brattleboro, Vt., selected Mark Lipson for its 2011 Organic Leadership Awards.
Lipson, organic and sustainable agriculture policy adviser in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s marketing and regulatory programs office, won in the “Growing Organic Agriculture” category, according to an association news release.
The OTA awards gala will be during OTA Member Day activities Sept. 21 at Natural Products Expo East in Baltimore.
Lipson joined the USDA in June 2010. He is responsible for cross-agency coordination of organic farming policy issues, and he assists with the “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” initiative.
Since 1983, Lipson has been a member of Molino Creek Farming Collective in California. He established the statewide office of California Certified Organic Farmers in the middle of the 1980s. He was chairman of the California Organic Food Advisory Board from 1991 to 1997. Until last year, he served as policy program director and senior policy analyst for the Organic Farming Research Foundation, Santa Cruz, Calif., which he joined in 1995.
