The U.S. Department of Agriculture is scheduling a hearing on proposed amendments to the marketing order for Florida citrus.

Florida Citrus Administrative Committee At the April 24 hearing in Winter Haven, Fla., USDA officials plan to discuss proposed modifications to the federal marketing order for Florida oranges, grapefruit, tangerines and tangelos.

The hearing plans to cover amendments recommended by the Lakeland-based Florida Citrus Administrative Committee which oversees local administration of the marketing order.

Among other things, the amendments would authorize different pack and container requirements for shipments inside Florida, the U.S. and internationally and regulate intrastate fruit movement, according to a news release.

The recommendations would also require handlers to register with the committee, allow the committee to approve regulation of new citrus varieties and hybrids and modify committee member terms of office and tenure requirements.

If the USDA agrees the proposed changes and could improve the marketing order’s operation, it will conduct a grower vote, according to the release.

The USDA published the hearing notice and proposed amendments in the March 28 Federal Register.
