Three of the nation’s leading school nutrition advocates will focus on the importance of higher standards in school meals at the United Fresh Washington Conference.
At a Sept. 9 luncheon, nutrition advocates from Mission: Readiness, an organization of more than 450 retired admirals and generals, the American Heart Association and the National Parent-Teacher Association will discuss new nutrition standards that increase the amount of fruits and vegetables school meals.
Speakers are James Barnett, Jr., retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral and member of Mission: Readiness; Eduardo Sanchez, deputy chief medical officer for the American Heart Association; and Otha Thornton, president of the National PTA, according to a news release.
“Mission: Readiness, the American Heart Association and the National PTA are among the most respected organizations fighting for improved nutrition in our nation’s schools,” United Fresh Produce Association president and chief executive officer Tom Stenzel said in the release. “From their own unique perspectives focused respectively on national security, fighting obesity and chronic disease, and students' overall well-being, each of these organizations is profoundly committed to increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables and other healthful foods for America’s schoolchildren. We look forward to hearing their compelling presentations and sharing their messages with policymakers in Washington, D.C.”
