Suslow, extension research specialist at the University of California-Davis’ Department of Plant Sciences, was presented the award by David Gombas, senior vice president of food safety and technology for the Washington, D.C.-based United Fresh.
Gombas called Suslow a “go-to” guy in the industry who works closely with companies to provide timely guidance, and is sought after for his insights on food safety standards.
“He is best known for his fearless attitude to tackling tough in-field research questions and being able to translate that into a solution that the industry needs in order to make practical, effective improvements,” Gombas said.
Gombas lauded Suslow for his “hands-on” approach to microbiology and his passion to bring other scientists into the field of produce safety during the May 1 presentation.
The award was originally given by the International Fresh-cut Produce Association in 1995 to recognize technical contributions to the fresh produce industry in the area of food safety and food quality, and Gombas said Suslow fit the bill.
Suslow expressed appreciation to United Fresh for the award and said it has been his passion to work with the produce industry since he obtained his graduate degree.
