United Fresh sets goal of 100 salad bars for Texas schools

The United Fresh Foundation and its partners have set a goal to donate 100 salad bars to schools in Texas this year.

The foundation has asked industry colleagues to help meet the charitable goal with a $2,500 donation to sponsor a salad bar in the state that will host the May 1-3 United Fresh 2012, according to Andrew Marshall, United Fresh policy and grassroots manager.

“Texas is a significant market for our industry and as we come together in Dallas this May for United Fresh, let’s create a positive impact by funding salad bars,” Dan’l Mackey Almy, United Fresh nutrition and health council chairwoman and president of Irving, Texas-based DMA Solutions, said in a news release from Washington, D.C.-based United Fresh Produce Association.

Marshall said United Fresh plans to highlight the salad bar donations shortly after the United Fresh expo opens May 1.

Lorelei DiSogra, United Fresh vice president of nutrition and health, said in the release that that students eat more fresh fruits and vegetables when they have a salad bar providing a variety of fruits and vegetables.

United Fresh is a founding partner of Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools, a national initiative that has donated salad bars to more than 1,000 schools nationwide, according to the release.

At United Fresh 2011, salad bars were donated to 33 New Orleans-area schools, according to the United Fresh news release.

For information on contributing to the Dallas salad bar effort, contact Marshall at 202-303-3407 or amarshall@unitedfresh.org.
