Sales of U.S. mushrooms were up this season, and production in 2011-12 should be similar to the year before.

Those are among the findings of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service’s annual Mushrooms report, released Aug. 19.

About 862 million pounds of mushrooms were sold in the 2010-11 marketing season, 9% more than in 2009-2010, according to the report.

About 724 million pounds of agaricus mushrooms ended up in fresh markets, 121 million pounds in processing.

The value of the crop was about $1 billion, 8% higher than the year before. The average price for mushrooms in 2010-11 was $1.16 per pound, just a cent lower than in 2009-10.

About 282 growers grew mushrooms in 2010-11, 35 fewer than the season before.

Pennsylvania accounted for 65% of agaricus mushroom production in 2010-11. The No. 2 producer, California, accounted for 14% of production.

Looking ahead, an estimated 134 million square feet of U.S. agaricus mushroom production is expected in 2011-12, about the same as in 2010-11.
