Van Solkema Produce is nearing completion of its value-added facility upgrades.
The revamped 27,000 square-foot space could be ready for operations as soon as July 29, Talbert Nething, sales manager of Byron Center, Mich.-based Van Solkema, said July 23.
At the facility, the company packs broccoli, cabbage, peppers, roma tomatoes, celery and other commodities in value-added packaging including overwraps, pouches and shrink wrap, Nething said.
The facility, in a section of an existing Van Solkema building, features aluminum paneling and an anti-microbial floor to ensure high food safety standards, Nething said.
It will feature new packing lines and packaging materials, and Famous Software tracking technology. New packaging labels used in the facility will be compatible with Global Trade Item Numbers, Nething said.
Eventually, Van Solkema plans to upgrade its new facility in Glennville, Ga., with similar features, Nething said. That process will begin with the installation of a carrot line this year.
