Sales of 24 leading vegetable and melon crops totaled $11.4 billion last year, while production fell 5%, to 414 million cwt., according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Vegetables 2013 Summary.

Onions, head lettuce and watermelon were the top three volume crops in 2013, accounting for 36% of all production.

Tomatoes, head lettuce and onions were the most valuable, making up 28% of the total value of 2013 crops.

About 49% of vegetable and melon production came from California, which also accounted for 52% of all sales. Florida, Arizona and Georgia followed in both share of production and value.

Two commodities, tomatoes and head lettuce, each topped $1 billion in sales in 2013.

Watermelon, broccoli and cantaloupes were three of a handful of commodities to see volume increases from 2012.

Cantaloupes, squash and spinach were among the few commodities whose value declined in 2013.

The report also included 2013 strawberry statistics. Strawberry production fell from 30.1 million cwt. to 30 million cwt. The crop’s value increased from $2.4 billion to $2.5 billion.
