About 82 acres of tomatoes in greenhouses in Marfa and Presidio were damaged May 31, said Doug Kling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Eatontown, N.J.-based Village Farms.
The company’s greenhouses in Fort Davis, Texas, and Monahans, Texas, were not damaged. Due to full production at those facilities and at Village Farms’ 110-acre facility in Delta, British Columbia, supply disruptions should be limited, Kling said.
The timing of the storm also limited overall company volume losses, Kling said.
“By mid-June we’re starting to clear out” the Marfa and Presidio greenhouses, he said. “The timing was the least invasive.”
As of June 14, Village Farms believed that the two facilities were salvageable, though it was still too soon to tell the full extent of damages, Kling said.
