The Wal-Mart Foundation plans to give about $1 million to further Growing Power’s work with 20 community food centers.

Wal-Mart executives plan to meet with Growing Power’s founder and chief executive officer, Will Allen, to announce the grant Sept. 9 at Growing Power’s headquarters in Milwaukee, according to a news release.

The grant will be used to provide the food centers with staff training, community education and strategies. The centers are spread across more than 15 states.

It’s part of the Wal-Mart Foundation’s National Giving Program, which now includes hunger relief in addition to promoting sustainable production systems. The foundation has committed $2 billion to combat hunger in the U.S.

“In rough times like today, everyone should have access to healthy and affordable food,” Allen said in the release. “What better way to obtain this food than growing it yourself or getting it from a local farmer.”
