Ready Pac Foods Inc. has received recognition for its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint from Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

The retailer presented Ready Pac with an Excellence in Sustainability award during Wal-Mart’s annual sustainable packaging exposition.

The award honored both Ready Pac, Irwindale, Calif., and Clear Lam Packaging Inc., Elk Grove Village, Ill., for innovations the companies developed for a peel and reseal tray. Ready Pac uses the trays for mixed greens clamshell containers, according to a news release from Ready Pac.

The trays use one-third less plastic than other containers, which allows for an extra layer on each pallet during transportation, according to the release.

“The peel-reseal project is a great example of the collaborative work with Ready Pac and their packaging supplier, Clear Lam,” Wal-Mart’s director of private brand packaging Chet Rutledge said in the news release.

“Not only does this packaging system use less material, it is more efficient throughout the supply chain. This is a project that I will use as a model for future projects.”
