Runners of the Marine Corps Marathon crossed the finish line to a nontraditional refreshment — watermelon. The marathon was the finale of a series of events the watermelon industry participated in last weekend in Washington D.C.
The staff of the National Watermelon Promotion Board, watermelon mascot “J. Slice”, the National Watermelon Queen and all of the regional Watermelon Queens were in attendance.
The team handed out free watermelon samples, provided by Class Produce Group, and promotional materials at the Health & Fitness Expo, the Healthy Kids Fun Run, a 10K and the marathon.
Representing the National Watermelon Promotion Board, Monica Olivas from the popular running blog RunEatRepeat, ran the marathon in under four hours. According to a watermelon board news release, 10,000 10K runners and 30,000 marathon runners participated.
“From the research, promotion and education point of view of the NWPB, participating in the MCM weekend allowed us to connect with our target audiences and influence their purchase behavior for watermelon at an unexpected time of year,” according to the release.
