A.G. Kawamura, former secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, has been named Western Growers’ Award of Honor winner.

The award will be presented at the trade association’s 86th annual meeting Nov. 6-9 at The Grand Del Mar resort in San Diego. Online registration for the meeting is at www.wgannualmeeting.com/register.

Kawamura will be honored for his efforts to raise funds and awareness for Western Growers’ school garden program, according to a news release.

Recent recipients of Western Growers Foundation grants funding such gardens included College View School in Glendale, Calif., and Marie Curie Elementary in San Diego. More than 475 gardens have been planted in California and Arizona.

Kawamura, a former chairman of Western Growers, grows strawberries and other commodities in Orange County, Calif.

Last year’s award recipient was Milo Ferini, co-founder of Santa Maria, Calif.-based Betteravia Farms.

Other events at the annual meeting are scheduled to include educational workshops on alternative energy, genomics, retail and foodservice.
