A nutrition policy leader in the Obama administration will give the keynote address to the United Fresh Produce Association’s 2013 Washington Public Policy Conference.

Sam Kass, executive director of Let’s Move!, senior nutrition policy advisor and assistant chef at the White House, will speak to WPPC attendees Oct. 2, according to a news release from United Fresh.

Kass leads first lady Michelle Obama’s effort to help America raise a healthier generation of children, according to his White House biography. He previously was senior policy advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives and helped create the first major vegetable garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s Victory Garden.

Kass worked with United Fresh to create Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools, according to the United Fresh news release. That campaign supports the Let’s Move! initiative by donating salad bars to schools to increase fresh fruit and vegetable consumption.

Kass played a role in federal nutrition policy with his work on the passage and current implementation of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, according to the United Fresh release.

“Sam Kass is a dynamic leader, inspiring the public and private sectors to come together for real change to improve child nutrition, and we are excited to have him as a keynote speaker at the Washington Public Policy Conference,” Tom Stenzel, president and chief executive officer of United Fresh, said in the release. “United Fresh is honored to be leading Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools and supporting first lady Michelle Obama and Sam Kass in their work to improve nutrition for America’s children.”

Kass is a Chicago native and graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in U.S. history. He worked at 312 and Avec in Chicago and was trained as a chef by one of Austria’s greatest chefs, Chef Christian Domschitz in Vienna, according to the White House biography.
