Tauranga, New Zealand-based Zespri International is displaying kiwifruit in display cases equipped with quick-response codes.

The first displays, each of which holds three or four volume-filled boxes of fruit, are scheduled to be installed in produce departments at Compton, Calif.-based retail chain Ralphs the week of Aug. 8, said Michele Hoard, senior marketing manager for Zespri North America.

More retail chains will add the displays in coming weeks, Hoard said. The displays are scheduled to be up through October.

Using their smartphones, consumers can scan the QR codes on the displays and gain instant access to Zespri’s website.

“We’re looking to engage consumers where our kiwifruit is displayed,” Hoard said. “This allows consumers direct access to Zespri’s outstanding nutritional value, handling tips, Zespri’s commitment to sustainability, our great recipes and an opportunity to get to know Zespri’s growers.”

The new displays also feature front drawers where consumers can find recipe cards and Spifes — a half spoon/half knife utensil for eating kiwifruit.
