Allen Floyd named 2009 Potato Man for All Seasons

Allen Floyd, a Washington grower-shipper and former chair of the state’s potato commission, has been named the 2009 Potato Man for All Seasons.

Floyd, president of Harvest Fresh Produce Inc., Othello, Wash., is recognized for his contributions to Washington State and national potato issues. The Packer, sister publication The Grower, and the National Potato Council present the annual award.

Floyd received the award Jan. 3 in Orlando at the annual meeting of the Washington, D.C.-based National Potato Council. The Packer, The Grower magazine and the potato council present the award each year.

Vance Publishing Corp., Lincolnshire, Ill., owns The Packer and The Grower.

Since 1972, Floyd has co-owned and managed Othello, Wash.-based Harvest Fresh Produce, which packs its own and other growers’ potatoes grown on 1,500 acres, according to a release from the Washington State Potato Commission.

Floyd served on the commission for 12 years, including a stint as chairman in 2004-05.

For the past two years he has served as national chairman of the Salt Lake City-based United Potato Growers of America. He was chairman for three years of the Washington/Oregon United Growers Co-op, an organization he helped found.

Floyd also has served on the U.S. Potato Board, the Washington State Potato Committee and the Washington State Potato Foundation board.
