(Feb. 13) The New York Apple Association, Fishers, and T. Marzetti Co., Columbus, Ohio, are teaming up for the seventh-annual Commissary Display Contest.

Intended to promote the sale and consumption of New York-grown apples, the contest runs from Jan. 28 through March 1, and is open to approximately140 military commissaries east of the Rockies.

The contest, which began in 2001, has been more successful each year, said Cathy Jadus, spokeswoman for the association. Last year there were 44 entrants, and nearly twice as many are expected this year.

Entrants are to construct displays of New York apples and T. Marzetti Caramel Apple Dip and Apple Crisp. Displays must identify or mention New York apples or use the association’s “Apple Country” logo.

Judging will be based on creativity, originality and sales appeal, with grand prize winners receiving full registration ticket to the 2008 Produce Marketing Association Fresh Summit in Orlando, Fla. Six grand prizes will be awarded.
