(July 8, PACKER WEB EXCLUSIVE) The Washington Apple Education Foundation, Wenatchee, Wash., awarded 10 academic and community grants to assist growers and their families.

The foundation awarded a total of $28,000 to community and school programs.

The grants fund activities that promote scholastic success for those involved in the tree fruit industry, including the purchase of elementary-level library books, reading materials and supplies to enhance dual-language classrooms and food and supplies for a summer camp program for at-risk students.

Applications for the 2009 cycle will be available at the foundation website, www.waef.org, after Sept. 1.

Applications must be submitted no later than March 15.
